How do we make this holiday season easy and safe so we can be fully present? Let’s take time to prepare and plan what our holidays will look like this year. Journal, meditate and visualize key events.
The seasons progress without our help. Here we are at the beginning of the holiday season. Halloween is over. Hopefully, there’s not too much candy remaining. ππ
How do you prepare for the holidays? Are you looking to freeze recipes before the big events? Don’t overcommit. I love to make a list of goodies I want to eat in the next two months. Then, I removed at least two recipes. Will the occasion be any less enjoyable with fewer desserts or appetizers? No one will know but me. π€«π
We are so grateful to have another family gathering in a few weeks with everyone, especially one-year-old Henry. Granddaughter Baby Smith is due in mid-December. πππAs a grandparent, it has been one of the most significant gifts to love and feel love, watch the weekly growth, and see how the generations progress, much like the seasons. As a Gigi, I hope and dream of a deep and rewarding relationship with my grandchildren, attending birthdays, school events, graduations, and weddings. Even virtually, we can stay in touch and do fun activities together. Envisioning how to create these moments is when my inner teacher shines through. What a treasure and pleasure it is to anticipate these moments. Who will be at your table through the seasons? What are you looking forward to celebrating?
A worrisome article recently illuminated the ill-health results of using a gas stove in the home. We’re often in the kitchen in the colder months. In the US, there are 40 million homes with gas stoves in their kitchens. Nitrogen dioxide fume levels can surpass healthy thresholds within minutes. How do we mitigate the risks? Ventilation is key. Turn the fan on whenever a gas stove is in use. I love using my toaster oven and electric teapot to reduce the time spent at my gas stove. Childhood cases of asthma have been linked to gas stove usage. At this time of the year, when we gather around the hearth, power up your fan. Open a window or a door for a breath of fresh air.
Let’s give ourselves grace through the holidays. Make your list of what brings you joy in and out of the kitchen. Maybe you’ll save a few items for next year. Aren’t the holidays really about being together? Take precautions to make your home environment as safe as possible.
One of the blessings of being a Gigi is looking at life through a lens that focuses on what’s essential and allowing what isn’t to fall by the wayside. As a community of women 55+, let’s create heartfelt, safe, fun, and not overdone moments.
Try this on for size. It’s January 1, and you’re reflecting on the holiday season. What does your favorite event look, sound, taste, smell, and feel like? Let’s reverse-engineer these special occasions so we can feel content when they’re over. True, safe, and soulful moments are within reach when we are the elders with vision in the room.
