Elizabeth Packard…unsung hero

Read and be changed

Women’s stories are vast, and some are unforgettable, especially when the storytelling is powerful.

Life-changing moments happen.

I had one when I read “The Woman They Could Not Silence” by Kate Moore.

When was your last life-changing moment? How did your life change?

I just finished Kate Moore’s  “The Woman They Could Not Silence” by Kate Moore, about Elizabeth Packard in the 1860s and her mighty struggles during her life and incarceration in an insane asylum.

Books that lead me to see the world in a new way are a rare find.

What was the last book that did that for you, changed your perception of the world?

I love a long book. When I found this one in the library's nonfiction section, I was unprepared for a thriller that read like one. Unputdownable, that’s how it’s described on the author’s page.

“Bestselling author Kate Moore brings her sparkling narrative voice to The Woman They Could Not Silence, an unputdownable story of the forgotten woman who courageously fought for her own freedom and freed millions more.”

Captivating in its historical descriptions

I was in. Don’t you love a book that inspires you to new heights?

I devoured this 454-page book at a page-turning speed that cooled me off as I read the inflammatory and maddening description of Elizabeth Packard’s treatment during her adult life.

Kate Moore checked many boxes with this full-length biography of a politically significant woman in the 1860s.

It’s wonderfully written. Kate Moore creates the world of the horrid conditions of women in insane asylums in the mid-nineteenth century.

Ms. Moore’s writing is captivating, even about this extremely upsetting subject.

This was the biography of a woman I needed to familiarize myself with.

The story of Elizabeth Packard needs to be as familiar as those of Harriet Tubman or Susan B. Anthony.

Thank you to Kate Moore for her exquisite writing style, which is truly unputdownable, and for all of the blood, sweat, and tears it must have taken to research Elizabeth Packard’s life thoroughly.

What’s your story? Who are the main characters? What are the heartaches and goals?

Gift yourself the wisdom and compassion inherent in the life of a trailblazer who changed the lives of millions of women in 1860.

The leader of women’s rights, Elizabeth Packard, may change your life, too.

My response was, “All day, every day.”

Ageless inspiration

A last quote from this not-soon-to-be-forgotten book is,

“Unruly women are always witches, no matter what century we're in.”        Roxane Gay, 2015
